Emergency Dental Guide: What to Do While You’re on Your Way

Dental emergencies are stressful, but taking the right steps in the first 30 minutes can often mean the difference between saving or losing a tooth. If you are in pain, call our Shelley office immediately at 208-357-7900. Here is how to handle common situations until you arrive:

1. Severe Toothache or Swelling

  • Action: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clear debris. Use dental floss to gently ensure no food is trapped between teeth.

  • What to Avoid: Never place an aspirin directly against the gums near the aching tooth, as this can burn the tissue.

  • The Shelley Fix: We will likely use our diagnostic lasers to see if the issue is a deep cavity or an infection requiring laser-assisted root canal therapy.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Action: Pick up the tooth by the crown (the top), never the root. Rinse it gently with water if it's dirty, but do not scrub it. If possible, try to place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in a small container of milk.

  • Time is Critical: Try to get to our office within 30 to 60 minutes.

3. Broken or Lost Crown

  • Action: If the crown is still intact, try to slip it back over the tooth using a little bit of over-the-counter dental adhesive or even toothpaste (never superglue!).

  • The Shelley Fix: If the crown is damaged or lost, don't worry—we can often use our Same-Day Crown technology to mill you a brand-new permanent one in about 90 minutes.

4. Cracked or Chipped Tooth

  • Action: Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to keep swelling down. Save any pieces of the tooth you can find.

  • The Shelley Fix: We can use cosmetic bonding or a same-day veneer to restore the tooth’s appearance and strength quickly.

5. Abscess or Gum Swelling

  • Action: This is a sign of a serious infection. Rinse with salt water and avoid hot/cold foods.

  • The Shelley Fix: We prioritize these cases to prevent the infection from spreading. Our laser irrigation is specifically designed to kill bacteria in these hard-to-reach areas.
