FOTONA NIGHTLASE

Fotona's NightLase is a non-invasive laser procedure designed to reduce snoring and the symptoms of mild sleep apnea by tightening the tissues in the upper airway.

Because it’s non-surgical and doesn't involve incisions or chemical anesthesia, it has become a popular "middle ground" for patients who aren't quite ready for a CPAP machine or surgery.

How It Works:

The procedure uses a specific type of laser (Er:YAG) in a patented "SMOOTH" mode.

  • Collagen Stimulation: The laser delivers gentle heat to the oral mucosa (the soft tissues at the back of the throat). This heat causes the existing collagen to contract and stimulates the production of new collagen (neocollagenesis).

  • Tissue Tightening: As the tissues in the soft palate, uvula, and sides of the throat become firmer and tighter, they are less likely to vibrate (which causes snoring) or collapse (which causes apnea).

  • Airway Expansion: By tightening these lax tissues, the airway becomes more open, allowing for better airflow during sleep.

The Procedure Experience

  • No Anesthesia: Most patients describe it as a sensation of "warm mist" or gentle heat. No needles or numbing agents are typically required.

  • Quick Sessions: Each treatment usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Typical Course: A full treatment plan usually consists of three separate sessions spaced over a 6-to-9-week period.

  • Zero Downtime: You can eat, drink, and talk immediately after the appointment.

Expected Results and Longevity

  • Effectiveness: Studies and clinical reports often cite an 80-85% satisfaction rate, with many patients noticing a significant reduction in snoring volume and "choking" events during sleep.

  • Duration: The results typically last 6 to 12 months. Since collagen naturally breaks down over time, a "maintenance" session once a year is usually recommended to keep the tissues tight.

  • Side Effects: The most common side effect is a temporary dry or slightly sore throat, similar to a minor scratchy feeling, which usually resolves within 24–48 hours.

Who is a Good Candidate?

  • Primarily Snorers: People whose snoring is caused by tissue laxity rather than nasal obstructions (like a deviated septum).

  • Mild to Moderate Sleep Apnea: It can be very effective for mild OSA, but it is not usually a replacement for CPAP in severe cases.

  • CPAP Intolerant: It is often used for patients who cannot tolerate wearing a mask at night.
